Harvest a crop before it is mature and it drops nothing at all — there is no partial yield in Allumeria. Weeds are the exception in the other direction: they drop nothing even when mature, but they still roll for mutation, which makes them useful rather than purely annoying.
The three mechanics that decide your farm layout
- Wet Soil. Crops only grow on wet soil. Water it by hand with the Watering Can or automate it with Sprinklers — the Farmer NPC sells both, and the watering can is "always full, because magic", so there is no water-hauling loop to build.
- Weeds. Each random tick, an empty wet-soil tile has a 1% chance to sprout a weed, and a matured weed spreads to an orthogonally adjacent empty wet tile 90% of the time. Leaving gaps in a field is what lets weeds take over; planting every tile is the real countermeasure.
- Mutation. When any crop or weed matures there is a 10% chance it mutates and spreads one of seven crops to an adjacent empty soil tile: Arrow Root, Bomb Berry, Glow Bean, Rock Melon, Tomato, Watermelon or Wheat. Bomb Berries and Rock Melons have no other source, and Arrow Root and Glow Beans otherwise only come from chest loot.
Put those together and the efficient farm is a fully planted block with a deliberate ring of empty wet tiles around it — planted tiles to trigger mutations, empty tiles for the mutation to land on. That is also how you get the "Mutation!" achievement.
Fishing and food
Fishing shares the Farmer's shop and the Compendium's third tab, which lists fish alongside the Adventure Guide and Recipes. The Crate Potion raises your chance of pulling up a crate rather than a fish for five minutes. If you only want the achievement, "Ultimate Fishing Legend for Eternity" needs exactly one fish.
